Starting Year 12 strong
Have you just started Year 12? It can be a whirlwind of excitement and pressure, but we are here to help you with some tips on how you can plan ahead and set yourself up for a great final year at school.
Yes, Year 12 can feel overwhelming with the extra workload and higher stakes but having a solid study plan can make a huge difference – even small habits to help you unwind and take care of your mental and physical health.
Kick off Year 12 on the right foot to avoid last-minute stress later in the year. Here’s how:
- set up a dedicated study space at home
- get a calendar and mark important dates on your calendar
- familiarise yourself with your classes and syllabus
- set clear, achievable goals
- establish a weekly study routine.
Study tips for Year 12
Feeling overwhelmed? These strategies will help you make the most of your final year.
Prioritise your wellbeing
Before diving into your workload, make sure you're looking after yourself. Getting enough sleep, eating well and staying active can help you manage stress and stay focused. If you’re struggling to find the motivation to take breaks and move your body, why not try a free or low-cost group activity in your area, like the City of Gold Coast’s Active and Healthy Program? Sometimes, a little structure and a fun environment can make it easier to show up for yourself!
Find your best learning style
Are you a visual learner who benefits from colour-coded notes? Or do you absorb information best through discussion and teaching others? Experiment with different methods to see what helps you retain information.
Stay organised
A cluttered space can lead to a cluttered mind. Keep your study area tidy, and if you need a break, a quick tidy-up can help reset your focus.
Manage distractions
Social media is a major distraction. Try studying in a phone-free zone or use an app to block notifications. If you struggle with self control, consider giving your phone to a family member until you finish studying.
Take regular breaks
Research shows that breaks improve concentration and retention. Try the Pomodoro Technique: 25 minutes of focused work followed by a 5 minute break. Use a timer to keep yourself accountable.
Ask for help when needed
If you're struggling with a subject, ask your teacher or seek extra tutoring early on. Don’t wait until the last minute to get support.
Balancing study and fun
Yes, Year 12 is important, but don’t forget to enjoy your final year. Spend time with friends, participate in school events, and find ways to de-stress. Maintaining balance will help you avoid burnout.
What if you don’t get the result you want?
It’s normal to feel stressed out to achieve a certain result but remember—there are always alternative pathways to university and careers. Many students pursue bridging courses, TAFE or direct-entry programs to reach their goals. Keep things in perspective and explore all your options.
